some of my hottest performances collected are also not prisitne recordings, It's all a matter of preference. I prefer a gooey Dark Star, Pig Pen and lots of psychadellic jamming, usually found 68-70. I also love Oade AUD recordings of the 80's(85 Richmond etc) and the remastered efforts of Charlie Miller(especially the 69 era). I like 6.24.70 & 11-8-70 even though they are marginal AUD recordings, I love the effort tapers made back then.

My favs are usually ones where you can taste the emotion. You can always tell when they are just going through the motions. But on certain nights...the music just seemed to drive them to the upper stratosphere. those are the ones that i consider the best.

Amen DYER! A show has got to move me on a soul level. If for whatever reason the show turns me off does it really matter if it is a highly ranked show?
I will give you an example of a show that moved me. Brent was doing DONt NEED LOVE and he would usually play it before drums, The song to put it mildly was not very well received and a lot of times Jerry would depart for an early break. One night after DONT NEED LOVE .Jerry steps up and breaks into Uncle Johns "Anybodies Choice I can hear your voice" It was special and I would have to consult Deadbase but I think Brent put that song to rest shortly after that.

Jesus Pig, talk about two of the best examples of great shows that most people won't listen to because of the recording quality. Hit it right on the head.

The other thing about shows which never circulated as boards - back in the day it was so much harder to trade that people only wanted the best sounding tapes and would mostly put recording quality over playing. Thus certain shows with great quality boards because WIDELY circulated and loved. The lesser quality recording, especially early years audience recordings were just so hard to come by. No matter how well played, they rarely get mentioned because not many people have heard them, or in some cases, won't even listen to auds. What a shame.

I searched for a copy of 6-24-70 for almost 15 years. Granted, I was not the heaviest trader but had a nice collection. With todays technology, you can get anything you want at your finger tips. Like they say, it's a different world we live in.......
